How to Tell If Your Copper Is Genuine: 7 Simple Tests You Can Do at Home

Copper is one of those materials that gets imitated a lot — usually as a thin copper plating over steel, brass, or aluminium, which is cheaper to produce but won't perform, age, or last the way solid copper does. If you've bought a copper water bottle, tongue cleaner, bracelet, or cookware piece and want to check what you're actually holding, you don't need a lab. A handful of simple checks, done together, will get you most of the way there.

We put this guide together because we'd genuinely rather have customers who question and check than ones who take any brand's word for it — ours included. None of these tests alone is 100% conclusive, but running two or three of them together gives you a pretty reliable picture. If you want absolute certainty, the only fully definitive method is a professional XRF (X-ray fluorescence) test, which we cover at the end.

1. The Colour Check

Genuine copper has a distinctive warm tone: a pinkish, salmon-red when freshly polished, settling into a deeper reddish-orange or reddish-brown with normal handling. It's worth comparing your item side-by-side with a copper coin or a piece you already trust, since the colour is quite specific and hard to fake convincingly — brass, for comparison, leans more yellow-gold, and nickel or chrome plating looks silver.

2. The Magnet Test

Copper is non-magnetic, so hold a reasonably strong magnet against your item. If it sticks, or you feel any pull, you're not looking at pure copper — most likely a steel or iron-based item that's been copper-plated.

One honest caveat: this test only works in one direction. No magnetic pull doesn't automatically prove it's copper, because plenty of other metals used in cheap imitations — brass, aluminium, and some grades of stainless steel — are also non-magnetic. Think of the magnet test as a way to rule things out, not a way to confirm on its own.

3. The Patina Test

Real, unlacquered copper reacts with air, moisture, and the oils on your skin over time. With regular use, you should see it naturally darken toward a deeper reddish-brown, and in humid conditions or with prolonged skin contact it can develop a green or blue-green patina (verdigris) — the same effect you'll see on old copper roofing or statues. If an item is genuine copper, some visible change over weeks or months of normal use is expected and normal, not a flaw.

4. Does It Turn Your Skin Green? (That's Actually a Good Sign)

A lot of people assume a greenish tint on their skin after wearing copper jewellery means the piece is cheap or fake, or that they're having an allergic reaction. It's actually the opposite: that green mark is copper carbonate forming as the copper reacts with oxygen, sweat, and the natural oils on your skin — a sign you're dealing with real, reactive copper rather than a heavily lacquered or plated substitute. It's harmless, has nothing to do with purity in a negative sense, and fades once you stop wearing the item.

5. The Vinegar & Salt Shine Test

This is essentially the classic "clean a dirty penny" experiment, and it works because of real chemistry: copper reacts with air to form a dull copper oxide layer (that's what tarnish actually is), and a weak acid combined with salt dissolves that oxide layer efficiently, revealing bright copper underneath.

To try it: mix a small amount of salt into white vinegar (or lemon juice) to make a light paste, and gently rub it onto a small, inconspicuous area with a soft cloth. Genuine, tarnished copper should visibly brighten back to that pinkish-copper colour within a minute or so of gentle rubbing. If nothing happens at all, or a different-coloured metal shows through, that's worth a closer look.

A couple of practical notes: test on a hidden spot first if the item has any coating or lacquer, and rinse and dry the item afterwards — copper left damp will start re-oxidising quickly, which is normal.

6. The Scratch Test

Find a small, inconspicuous spot — the underside of a base, or inside a handle — and make a very light scratch. If the colour underneath the scratch is the same warm copper tone as the surface, that's a good sign. If a different-coloured metal (silvery, yellowish, or grey) appears beneath the surface, the item is likely plated rather than solid copper.

7. The Sound & Feel Test

Give the item a gentle tap. Solid copper tends to produce a duller, deeper sound, and it's a relatively soft metal — it dents and bends more easily than steel or aluminium. A sharp, tinny ring can be a sign you're dealing with thin plated steel or brass instead. This is the least precise test on this list, since shape and thickness affect sound a lot on their own, so treat it as a supporting clue rather than proof by itself.

For the More Curious: The Density Test

This one takes a bit more setup but is the most quantitative test you can run at home. Pure copper has a known, fixed density of 8.96 g/cm³ — denser than almost anything you'd find imitating it (brass is around 8.4-8.7 g/cm³, aluminium about 2.7 g/cm³), so a density check can meaningfully narrow things down.


The basic version: weigh the item on a kitchen scale in grams, then submerge it fully in a tall, narrow container of water (making sure no air bubbles are trapped anywhere) and measure how much the water level rises in millilitres. Density = weight ÷ volume risen. A result reasonably close to 8.96 g/cm³ supports genuine copper; a result far below it more likely points to a trapped air pocket or a lighter material than to a measurement fluke.


This test is genuinely sensitive to technique — trapped air bubbles, a wide container, or a low-precision scale can all throw the number off — so if you try it, it's worth repeating it two or three times and averaging the results rather than trusting a single reading.
