Shopping for a copper magnetic bracelet and wondering whether you actually need the magnets? You're not alone. Magnetic and non-magnetic copper bracelets look similar, but they're built differently and suit different people. This guide explains the difference, who each one suits, how to get the right fit, and what the research honestly says, so you can choose with confidence.
- Magnetic copper bracelets are pure copper with small magnets set into the band. People choose them for the traditional "copper + magnet" combination.
- Non-magnetic copper bracelets are pure copper only. They're the better choice if you have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, or simply prefer a cleaner, minimalist cuff.
- Neither is a medical device. Choose the one you'll enjoy wearing every day.
What is a copper magnetic bracelet?
A copper magnetic bracelet is a band made from copper with small magnets embedded along its inner side, so they sit against your wrist. The idea combines two long-standing traditions: wearing copper, which has been worn on the wrist across cultures for centuries, and magnet therapy, which has been popular as a folk practice since at least the 1800s.
Our Air, Fire and Ocean bracelets are handcrafted by artisans from 100% pure copper, free from lead, coatings and fillers, with magnets set into the design.
What is a non-magnetic copper bracelet?
A non-magnetic copper bracelet, often called a pure copper bracelet or copper cuff, is simply solid copper with nothing added. Many people prefer it for its simplicity, lighter feel and because it's suitable for almost everyone, including people who need to avoid magnets.
Our Grace cuff is handmade from 100% pure copper with an open, adjustable design that fits most wrists, for both men and women.

Do magnetic copper bracelets work?
This is the question everyone asks, so here's an honest answer. Many people say they enjoy wearing copper and magnetic bracelets and find them a comforting daily ritual. However, the scientific evidence for health effects is limited. A well-known randomised trial from the University of York, published in PLOS ONE in 2013, found no meaningful difference in rheumatoid arthritis symptoms between people wearing copper bracelets or magnetic wrist straps and those wearing placebo versions.
That's why we don't make health claims about our bracelets. We make them for people who love copper's warmth, tradition and craftsmanship, and who want a beautiful, honest piece of jewellery made without coatings or lead. If you're considering a bracelet for a health condition, please speak with your doctor.
Which one should you choose?
Choose a magnetic copper bracelet if…
- you're drawn to the traditional combination of copper and magnets
- you like a more decorative, patterned band
- you don't have a pacemaker or any other implanted medical device
Choose a non-magnetic copper bracelet if…
- you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump or other implanted device
- you're pregnant, or your doctor has advised you to avoid magnets
- you prefer a minimalist cuff you can adjust to your wrist
- you're buying a gift and aren't sure about the recipient's health needs. Non-magnetic is the safe choice.

How to get the right fit
- Magnetic bracelets: ours are one size fits most. Slide the bracelet on over the narrowest part of your hand and let it sit just above the wrist bone.
- Copper cuffs: to adjust, gently press the ends inwards or ease them apart, a little at a time. Avoid bending the same spot repeatedly, as this can weaken the metal.
- Which wrist? There's no rule. Most people wear their bracelet on the wrist that feels most comfortable, often the non-dominant hand so it doesn't get in the way.
Why does copper turn my skin green?
A faint green mark on your skin is completely normal with real copper jewellery. Copper reacts with moisture, sweat and skin oils to form a thin layer of copper salts. It's harmless and washes off with soap and water. In fact, it's a good sign your bracelet is genuine copper. Keeping your bracelet clean and dry reduces it.
How to care for a copper bracelet
- Take it off before swimming, showering or using cleaning products.
- Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
- To restore the shine, rub gently with lemon juice and a pinch of salt, rinse and dry straight away.
- Or embrace the patina. Copper darkens naturally over time, and many people love the warm, vintage look.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a copper bracelet and a magnetic bracelet?
A copper bracelet is made from copper only. A magnetic copper bracelet is also made from copper but has small magnets embedded in the band. Both can be pure copper; the magnets are the only difference.
Can I wear a magnetic copper bracelet every day?
Yes. Most people wear their bracelet daily. Just take it off for swimming and showering, and remove it if you notice any skin irritation.
Who should not wear a magnetic bracelet?
Magnetic bracelets aren't suitable for anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump or other implanted medical device, as magnets can interfere with them. If you're pregnant or unsure, talk to your doctor first, or choose a non-magnetic copper cuff.
Can I sleep with my copper bracelet on?
You can, if it's comfortable. Some people prefer to take it off at night to give their skin a break.
Are Goodly Gosh copper bracelets pure copper?
Yes. Our bracelets are handcrafted from 100% pure copper, free from lead, coatings and fillers.
Do copper bracelets help with pain?
Some people say they find wearing copper comforting, but scientific evidence for pain relief is limited, and copper bracelets aren't a medical treatment. If you have pain or a health condition, please see a healthcare professional.
