Earth hour is an annual event that takes place on the last Saturday of March, when people around the world turn off their non-essential lights for an hour as a symbol of their commitment to the planet.
The event began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and has since grown to become a global movement organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
During Earth Hour, individuals, businesses, and governments are encouraged to turn off their lights for one hour- from 8.30-9.30pm local time.
The goal of Earth hour is to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change and other environmental issues, and to demonstrate that individuals and communities can make a difference by taking simple steps to reduce their energy consumption.
The Question is- Do we need an Earth hour?
As a society and as dwellers of this planet Earth, we have come to this point where we request only an hour of our resources/life for this planet that sustains us, nourishes us, provides us with all the sustenance that we need to live from our birth till the moment we die.
Isn't that too selfish to have just an hour for Earth? Shouldn't our life be around and embedded in and with nature where we live in complete harmony with nature?
Before we take any big decisions, the impact it will have on the environment should be given highest weightage even if we have to compromise on human wants (not the needs).
If environment and nature is not part of our everyday lives then let's start with Earth Hour this month, this week and come together as a community that cares about the environment and not just takes it as a resource factory to fulfill our wants.
Let's talk to our family and friends, and the people we know , and start this conversation about the impact our human activities leave on this planet.
Let's talk about the impact of climate change, shift in seasons, global warming, mass extinction of various species of flora and fauna that are simply because of our human wants and not needs.
Let's talk about consumerism, fast fashion, plastic-pollution, poor quality products that cannot be repaired, use and throw culture and the impact it leaves on the environment.
Let's make Earth Hour into Earth-Prior as this is our Home and our only Home.
Make some changes into our life starting with simply things like using your own good-quality reusable bags, reusable water-bottles, reusable coffee cups, reducing our water wastage, food wastage, electricity and all the resources, plant trees and conserve our native forests.
All this change starts with a conversation and by sharing knowledge- Let's Be the Change We want to See.
